How to Look After Different Types of Flooring: Tiles, Stone, Wood and Vinyl

Related Articles

Each flooring material needs slightly different care to look good and last.

Tiles are generally tough and easy to maintain. Regular sweeping and mopping with mild cleaner is enough. Avoid very harsh acids that can damage grout and dull the surface over time.

Natural stone like marble or granite is more sensitive. Acidic cleaners (including strong vinegar) can etch the surface. Use pH-neutral cleaners and consider periodic professional polishing to maintain shine.

Wood floors dislike excess water. Clean with a slightly damp mop, not a soaking one, and wipe spills quickly. Use soft pads under furniture and avoid dragging heavy items to prevent scratches.

Vinyl and SPC floors are relatively low-maintenance. They handle daily mopping well, but again, avoid extremely harsh chemicals. They can scratch, so be kind with furniture movement.

In all cases, regular basic care beats rare, intense cleaning. Be gentle, consistent, and your floors will reward you by ageing gracefully.
