Windows and balconies are lovely for light and air, but in city apartments they can also be vulnerable points.
Basic grill work is the first layer. In lower floors especially, sturdy grills on windows facing open areas reduce easy access. For higher floors with kids, balcony railings and grills should be high and gap-safe so children can’t squeeze through or climb easily.
Install good latches and locks on sliding windows and balcony doors. Many flats come with flimsy locks that are easy to jiggle open. Upgrading them is a relatively cheap security boost.
Avoid keeping climbable furniture like stools, tables or AC stands right against balcony railings, especially if there are children around. You don’t want to give them a ladder.
Sheer curtains or blinds add a bit of visual privacy from neighbouring buildings, so people can’t easily see your routines and valuables.
Security doesn’t mean closing everything off; it means being smart about how easily someone could enter or see in.
