Common Overhead Tank and Water Pressure Issues—and What You Can Check Yourself

Related Articles

Overhead tanks and water supply issues are common in many buildings, but not every problem needs a panic call.

If taps suddenly have very low pressure, first check if it’s a building-wide issue or just your flat. Ask a neighbour. If the whole building is affected, it might be a municipal supply or pump issue.

Sometimes air gets trapped in the lines after tank cleaning or pump repairs. Opening taps fully for a short time can help release trapped air.

If water from certain taps is weak while others are fine, the problem might be a partially blocked aerator or local pipe, not the main tank. You can unscrew and clean aerators yourself in many cases.

Check overflow pipes from the tank. If you see continuous overflow, the ball valve or float mechanism may be faulty, wasting water.

Anything involving working at height, opening the tank lid or handling pumps is better left to building staff or professionals. Your role is to observe, note patterns, and share clear information so the right fix can happen.
