New balcony gardeners often start with great enthusiasm… and a bunch of small misunderstandings.
One big mistake is using heavy garden soil in pots. It compacts, drains poorly and suffocates roots. A lighter potting mix with compost and sand or perlite works much better in containers.
Overwatering is another classic problem. Many people think daily watering = love. But constantly soggy soil leads to root rot. Check the top inch of soil; if it’s still moist, skip a day.
Cramping too many plants into a small space also creates issues. Airflow decreases, diseases spread faster, and watering becomes harder to manage. Start with fewer, healthier plants.
Ignoring sun conditions is common too. Buying “pretty” plants without checking how much light they need often leads to disappointment. Match plant type to your balcony’s real light.
The good news? Plants are forgiving teachers. Watch them closely, adjust as you learn, and your balcony will slowly find its balance.
