Storage Design Basics: How to Plan Cupboards So They Actually Fit Your Stuff

Related Articles

Good storage is less about having many cupboards and more about designing them for what you actually own.

Start by listing broad categories: clothes, luggage, daily shoes, occasional shoes, bed linen, towels, files, kitchen stock, cleaning supplies. Each category needs a “home.”

In wardrobes, a mix of hanging space and shelves works better than only one type. Long-hanging for dresses, sarees and coats; shorter hanging for shirts and kurtas; shelves for folded items. Don’t forget at least one drawer for valuables or small items.

Deep shelves look big but often become black holes. Consider fewer very deep shelves and more medium-depth ones, or add pull-out baskets and organisers.

For kitchens, plan separate zones: cooking, prep, serving, storage. Tall units for pantry items, deep drawers for pots and pans, and overhead cabinets for lighter, less-used things.

Always add a little extra capacity beyond your current needs. Life rarely gets simpler or emptier over time.
