How to Prepare Your Home Before the Painters Arrive (So the Job Goes Smoothly)

A lot of painting stress isn’t from the paint itself—it’s from the mess and confusion around it. Preparing your home properly makes the whole job smoother.

Start by clearing as much as you reasonably can from the rooms—small decor, wall hangings, curtains, loose electronics, table-top items. Pack them in boxes or bags and keep them in one protected zone.

Move big furniture away from walls, at least enough for painters to work comfortably. If possible, shift some items to another room so movement is easier.

Cover remaining furniture and flooring with old bedsheets, plastic or newspapers. Don’t rely only on the painters; their idea of “enough protection” may differ from yours.

Decide in advance which walls get which colours and finishes. Keeping samples or notes handy avoids confusion on the day.

Finally, plan your stay—where you’ll sleep, which bathroom you’ll use, and how you’ll manage cooking during the messiest days. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping your sanity.
