Not every home issue needs a professional, but not everything is safe or smart to DIY either. The trick is knowing where to draw the line.
Small tasks—tightening screws, oiling hinges, changing bulbs, installing basic shelves, assembling simple furniture—are usually safe for a reasonably careful person. You save money and feel more connected to your space.
But anything involving electrical mains, gas lines, major plumbing, or structural changes is better left to experts. A mistake here can be dangerous or very expensive to fix.
Consider the tool cost too. If you need to buy or rent specialised tools that you’ll use once, hiring a pro might be cheaper overall.
Time and frustration matter as well. If a task will take a professional 30 minutes and you three days of YouTube and trial-and-error, the “saving” may not be worth it.
Ask yourself three questions: Is it safe? Do I understand the steps clearly? What happens if I get it wrong? If the answers make you nervous, call someone who does this for a living.
